This biography is of a ticket collector who used to work in Kharagpur, West Bengal. Yes , this is the Biography of MS Dhoni who became the most successful Indian Captain ever.

Biography of MS Dhoni

Birth and Family background

Mahendra Singh Dhoni was born on 7th July, 1981, in Ranchi, Bihar which is now in Jharkhand. Mahendra Singh Dhoni actually belongs to a Rajput family. His ancestral house is at Almora, Uttarakhand.

Young Mahendra's parents moved to Ranchi from Uttarakhand. His father, Pan Singh worked as junior manager in Mecon. Dhoni's sister's name is Jayanti Gupta and brother's name is Narendra Singh Dhoni. Dhoni was a great fan of Adam Gilchrist, Sachin Tendulkar, Lata Mangeshkar and Amitabh Bachchan since his childhood.

Schooling and Interests

Mahendra Singh Dhoni did his initial studies from DAV Jawahar Vidya Mandir, Shyamali. He was always interested in the sports from the beginning. He played both badminton and football a lot in his childhood. He was very good goal keeper in football and obviously who knew at that time that would be a wicket keeper in cricket.

Because of his goal keeping, a local cricket club selected him as a cricketer. Though he had never batted but because he was a good goal keeper he became a wicket keeper. This was The Commando Cricket Club. He played in this club from 1995 to 1998. He played so well that he was chosen to play the Vinoo Mankad trophy, under 16. He performed well there too.

Worked in Railways Department

In the class 10, he prepared for the Train Ticket Examiner exams and he was finally selected.  He also worked as a railway employee for the South Eastern railway at Midnapore from the year 2001 to 2003. His colleagues remember him as a good hearted and sincere person.

Naughty nature

But he was also very naughty. Once he played a prank with his friends while staying in the railway quarters. He wroamed the entire colony while wearing a white sheet. After that event, even the watchman was scared. People that the colony has become haunted.

Progress in the field of Cricket

Dhoni also played in the Bihar under 19 squad and then for the Jharkhand team. It became obvious that if Dhoni is batting than his team is bound to win. He debuted for Ranji Trophy while playing for the Bihar team. He continued to play cricket from 2000 to 2003 and remained a part of Ranji trophy. He also performed well in Deodhar trophy and had scored an awesome century.

Joining Indian Cricket team

BCCI also has a program in which they find good talent from small towns. Then Prakash Poddar, who was the captain of the Bengal team in 1960, saw Dhoni's talent. So the one who had to see it had seen it, and then Dhoni's talent worked wonders.

First he was selected for India and he played so well that our captain at that time, Sourav Ganguly saw him and even Ravi Shashtri had become a fan of his talent. A wicket keeper batsman was needed in Indian Cricket Team at that time.

Many people wanted that Dinesh Kartik should be chosen but finally Mahendra Singh Dhoni was selected for the 2005 tour of Bangladesh. He scored zero in the first match. He ran out and was unable to score anything in his first match. He perfomed badly in the Bangladesh series.

After that, when he was chosen to play with Pakistan, he made 148 run out of 123 balls in Vishakapatnam and also created a new record. This was the highest score ever scored by a wicket keeper.

In a match Sri Lanka had given a target of 299 runs at the Sawai ManSingh Stadium, Jaipur. It was a question of India's honor. Dhoni played 185 balls and made 183 runs. And India won this match. The rest is history.

He gradually became the vice captain of the team in 2007. And then he was chosen captain for T20 games . He was such a brilliant captain in 2007 and the first T20 World Cup was won by India under the captaincy of M.S Dhoni. After that in 2011 India also won the World Cup for One day internationals under the Dhoni's captaincy.

The retirement of Dhoni from Test matches was declared on the 30 December, 2014.

Various Awards and Records of Dhoni 

  • He was honoured with Padma Shri in 2009.
  • He recieved Rajib Gandhi Khel Ratna 2007-08.
  • He is also honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2018.
  • Indian Team won in ICC World T20 under Dhoni's captaincy.
  • Won Asia cup in 2010 and 2016.
  • ICC champions trophy in 2013.
  • Won ICC World Cup in 2011.

Dhoni continued to make new records. He has many records submitted to his name. Mahendra Singh Dhoni was one such captain, who increased the respect of previous captains like Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Azharuddin and Saurav Ganguly.

Personal life


Mahendra Singh Dhoni was married on 4th July, 2010 to Sakshi. She is also from Dehradun, Uttarakhand. She was doing her hotel management course when she got married and on 6th February 2015, Ziva was born to them.

Dhoni was doing well in whatever he was doing. By the way even today he always does the right thing. Cricket is described as a game of fate, but Mahendra Singh Dhoni used his talent o shape a new fate of Indian cricket.
