You can call him a lyricist, Call him as dialogue writer. You can call him as story writer. You can say film director. His real name is Sampooran Singh Kalra. That is our Gulzar sir.

He was born in 18th August 1936. Father's name is Makhan Singh Kalra. Mother's name is Sujan Kaur. He was born in Jhelum District of British India. Their ancestral property is in Dina's Jhelum area. After partition he left that and came away.

He worked as a car mechanic in Delhi. His father told him many times that;"son you want to become a writer. But there is no earning in this. It is better that you remain cordial with your brothers. When the luck is riding high you are sure to meet a person who becomes your driver."


Meeting with Bimal Roy

Gulzar's talent was recognized by legendry film maker Bimal Roy. "When ever I held your hands I have seen.People say that it is just the lines of the hands.I have seen the two fates getting united."

This story is famous that Gulzar sir was very fond of reading and writing. He read many writer's work. Due to which he got friendly with many writers and artists. One such friend of him took him to Bimal Roy. That time music director S.D.Burman and lyricist Shailendra had a fight. And film maker Bimal Roy was very upset.

Starting the career

It was decided that Gulzar must write lyrics on SD Burman's music.

He wrote his first song "Mora Gora Ang Laila." This song was released in 1963. This Bandini song was appreciated a lot by audience. By then SD Burman and Shailendra again became friends.

Gulzar was removed from the movie. But Bimal Roy stood by Gulzar. He told Gulzar to work as his assistant. He told him that," I don't want to see an artist like you work in a noisy garage. You have talent in you. This you have proved in your first song itself."

Hearing this Gulzar sir started to cry very badly. While working with Bimal Roy, Gulzar became friendly with RD Burman. By then he got introduced to Hrishikesh Mukerjee too. That time Hrishikesh Mukerjee was working as an editor. Later on he became director. Gulzar remained with him.

Hrishikesh didn't used Gulzar just as lyricist. He used him as dialogue writer too in film "Anand" and "Namak Haraam". Gulzar wrote such wonderful dialogues that people still remember it.

Worked for different generations

Gulzar is one writer who has got connected with all generations. It can be his "Mogli" song . It may be famous Mirza Galib's serial made for television. In both these Gulzar's talent got connected with the common man.

Gulzar worked with many famous music directors. It may be SD Burman, Salil Chowdary, RD Burman or Laxmikanth Pyarelal. It may have been new generation music director AR Rehman,. Vishal Bharadwaj or Shankar Ehsaan Loy. With Vishal his work was appreciated a lot.


Started Direction

His friendship with R.D. Burman was very good. That is the reason when Gulzar sir became film maker and he started to direct.

He directed his first movie named as "Mere Apne" in 1971. In most of his movies, RD Burman gave music. It may have been "Parichay"," Aandhi" or "Kinara". But in his first movie as director he used Salil Chowdary as music director. In the movie "Mausam" it was Madan Mohan. Gulzar' friendship with Sanjeev Kumar was very dear.

This story is famous that in Sanjeev Kumar sir's house only vegetarian food was cooked. To eat non vegetarian food he used to go to Gulzar's house. Gulzar and Sanjeev Kumar's combination was so good that they did wonders in movies. It may have been film 'Aandhi"which was made on husband and wife's relation. It could have been comedy movie 'Angoor' Or deaf and dumb husband wife story 'Koshish'.

Personal Life


Coming to Gulzar sir's personal life. He got married to famous actress Rakhee. From that marriage they have a daughter. Her name is Meghna Gulzar. She herself is a film director.

Gulzar and Rakhee's relationship didn't last for long. They both decided to separate. That is what happened. Gulzar has kept his daughter Meghna's name as "Bosky". He has named his bungalow as "Boskiana". The meaning of which is where Bosky stays. Gulzar sir's bungalow is in Mumbai's Pali Hill area.

There are very less people in Indian film industry who have kept their identity from black and white movie to colour movie. One among them is Gulzar sir. He has seen Bimal Roy working. He has worked with new generation people too like Ishad Ali and Vishal Bharadwaj.

Gulzar sir's talent has won everyone's heart. It could have been small screen,big screen or the beautiful screen of the heart. Till 2019 he was won a total of 36 awards which includes 21 Filmfare awards, 5 National Awards, 1 Academy award for best original song,a Grammy award, a Padma Bhushan and a DadaSaheb Phalke Award. In the history of Indian cinema Gulzar sir's name will be always taken proudly.


Here are some unknown facts about Gulzar.

  1. Before gaining praise publicly for his unmatched talent he used to work as a touch-up guy in a garage. After struggling for a while he finally got introduced to the public as a lyricist in 1963 in the movie "Bandini". 
  2. His father was not satisfied for his writing he was consistently criticized for wasting his time in writing
  3.  He wrote a song which gained such fame that it is still commonly sung as a prayer in schools it was  "hum ko man ki shakti dena"
  4.  He was influenced by Bhima Roy and Hrishikesh Mukherjee he considers them as his gurus.
  5. Gulzar always liked reading. He started with detective novels and one day the shack from where he would borrow books gave him a book that goes are claims to change his life that book was 'the gardener' by none other than Rabindranath Tagore.
  6. In 1972, he learned sign language for his movie "Koshish" which narrated the story of a deaf and dumb couple since then he has been working for the deaf and dumb children
  7. Gulzar Sahab gave words to one of our favorite childhood song "CHADDI PEHEN KE PHOOL KHILA HAI" in 'THE JUNGLE BOOK".
